Support Groups

Brain Injury Support
The Brain Injury Association of Iowa offers a monthly support group for family members of individuals who have sustained a brain injury. This group meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month in Room 1 at the Kimball Ridge Center, 2101 Kimball Avenue in Waterloo, Iowa. Breast Cancer Support Group - Touch of Courage
The Covenant Cancer Treatment Center offers Touch of Courage, a support group designed for breast cancer patients. Touch of Courage is designed to assist women dealing with breast cancer through emotional support and education.  The group meets the first Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in Room 1 of the Kimball Ridge Center, 2101 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo. Breastfeeding Support
This weekly support group assists new moms and babies with breastfeeding questions and concerns. There is no cost to attend. Meetings are held on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. in the third floor mother/baby parent lounge at Covenant Medical Center, 3421 West Ninth Street, Waterloo, Iowa. Call (319) 272-8465 for more information.

Cancer Support Group - Care and Share
The Covenant Cancer Treatment Center offers Care and Share, a support group for individuals, families and friends who are coping with a cancer diagnosis. Care and Share is offered the first Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Cancer Treatment Center, 200 East Ridgeway, Waterloo.  Group discussions are facilitated by a licensed social worker. Sessions are offered free of charge to all participants. For more information call (319) 272-2800.

Diabetes Support Group
Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare offers a free support group for all persons with diabetes and their family members. Staff from Nurse On-Call and the Nutrition and Diabetes Education Center lead the group. Various health care professionals from the area are invited as guest speakers. The meetings are on the following days and locations:

  • 4th Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in Board Room at the Kimball Ridge Center, 2101 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo, Iowa.
  • 4th Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. in the cafeteria at Sartori Memorial Hospital, 515 College Street, Cedar Falls, Iowa.
  • 1st Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at Mercy Hospital, 201 8th Avenue, S.E., Oelwein, Iowa. 


Multiple Sclerosis Support Group

The Multiple Sclerosis Service League offers monthly support groups for people affected by multiple sclerosis and their families. The Buchanan MS Support Group meets in Independence, the Bremer/Butler MS Support Group meets in Waverly, the Waterloo/Cedar Falls MS Support Group meets in Waterloo, and the TAma MS Support Group meets in Toledo. Multiple Sclerosis Support Group Meeting
The purpose of MS Self Help group with approval of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society North Central States Chapter is to help individuals, their caregivers, and families with support and to provide information about living with the effects of MS. Meetings are from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of month at Covenant Medical Center, on the fourth floor of the Women & Outpatient Center (Use Entrance G).   We encourage especially the newly diagnosed and their caregivers and families to attend. For more information about the group please call (319) 235-2852 and ask for Perry or Sue or call the National MS Society at 1-800-344-4867 or the local chapter of North Central States Chapter out of Des Moines Iowa at (515) 270-6337. There is no charge and meeting discussions are kept strictly confidential. We hope to see you there. 


Surgical Weight Loss Support Group
The Midwest Institute of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery understands the life changing effects of undergoing weight loss surgery and the concerns of those contemplating having surgery. Our staff will be offering a support group for patients who have had weight loss surgery, individuals contemplating surgery and immediate family members. Meetings will be held at Sartori Memorial Hospital from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the first Monday of every month. Meetings will be an open forum for discussions with the staff of the Midwest Institute of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery. Every other month a special guest speaker will be featured to discuss topics pertaining to weight loss surgery. The support groups are open to patients who have had weight loss surgery, those contemplating having the surgery and family members. Stroke Information Network
Covenant Medical Center’s Rehabilitation program offers a monthly Stroke Information Network for stroke survivors and family members. This group meets the third Thursday of every month at 3 p.m. in the Skilled Nursing Unit Dining Room at Covenant Medical Center, 3421 West Ninth Street, Waterloo, Iowa. Each meeting features a different speaker or topic related to stroke, along with informational sharing time. For more information, call 272-7921.
New Hope
This support group is designed to provide emotional support and create an environment for learning for parents who have experienced an ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth, or death of an infant and/or young child. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m. in Room 1 of Covenant Medical Center. For more information call 319-272-7370.
