Covenant Medical Center is a 366 bed, full-service, multi-specialty hospital that provides acute, subacute, and outpatient health care. A full complement of facilities and services are available to support the community’s health care needs, including intensive care, operating and recovery rooms for both inpatient and ambulatory surgery, a Hospice unit to provide acute care to the terminally ill, skilled nursing, diagnostic radiology services such as X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, CT scanning, and mammography, laboratory, respiratory therapy, electrocardiology, and pharmacy. In addition Covenant provides complete emergency services. Emergency transport through Aircare helicopter service is provided through association with the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. Covenant also offers a comprehensive inpatient medical rehabilitation program. In addition to specialized rehabilitation nursing, needed inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation therapies are offered including neuropsychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language pathology, therapeutic recreation, and various support services such as family counseling and nutritional care. A Level II Regional Center for Perinatal Care is provided by Covenant Medical Center as well. As an extention of the Level II nursery, Covenant sponsors a high-risk obstetrics clinics that provides physician, nursing, nutrition, counseling, and other support services needed to help ensure healthy mothers and babies. Covenant’s commitment to fighting cancer is illustrated by our Cancer Treatment Center. This stand-alone facility furnishes outpatient chemotherapy and radiation oncology in the treatment and care of cancer, along with a full range of support services such as family counseling and nutritional care. Covenant’s Cancer Treatment Center also houses the local county chapter offices of the American Cancer Society. Covenant supplies renal dialysis service for persons with kidney disease. Both hemodialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis care is provided. Support services offered by social workers and dietitians contribute to this holistic approach to care. A satellite dialysis unit is located in Waverly. Covenant-Mercycare Inc. will be offering dialysis services in Vinton and Independence in the Spring of this year. Another service uniquely provided by Covenant Medical Center is its comprehensive behavioral health program. Psychiatric care for persons with mental illness is offered on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Specialized nursing, counseling, and other support services are provided as needed. Inpatient and outpatient nursing and counseling are also provided for persons experiencing issues with chemical dependency. Other Services Provided Include: - Life-line, a telephone contact system, enables the elderly or disabled to continue living alone in their home with emergency help only a button away. Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s network is one of the largest in the midwest with approximately 565 enrollees.
- Nurse On-Call, a free telephone service available to the general public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, offering medical advice or physician referral provided by registered nurses. This service receives approximately 121,000 call a year. An 800 number is provided to persons living outside the local calling area.
- Home Health, an organization providing continued nursing, therapy, or other support services in a patient’s home. Home Health conducts approximately 36,000 visits per year.
- Occupational Medicine and Wellness contracts with approximately 1,000 area businesses throughout Northeast Iowa to provide needed health care services such as injury treatment, drug and alcohol testing, and health education and disease prevention information for their employees.
- Numerous general health education opportunities and screenings offered to the community at large (wellness information; exercise/fitness classes; massage therapy; depression, anxiety, skin cancer, prostate cancer, and blood cholesterol screenings; support groups; safety and prevention events; etc.).
